The Algonquin Island Association clubhouse overlooks the city and the harbour, with gorgeous skyline views. It is situated amid acres of pristine parkland adjacent to a quiet residential neighbourhood a short ferry ride away from downtown Toronto. The clubhouse is the hub of island life throughout the winter months, with a Montessori school for pre-school children during the weekdays, and community social activities during the evenings and weekends. The building and grounds are available for weekend weddings and events from June to the end of September. For history of the AIA visit this link.
On March 21 and 22nd the AIA hosted the City of Toronto’s celebration of the Spring Equinox called Island Awakening. In conjunction with the Waterfront BIA, there were scheduled events at various Island locations throughout the weekend, including the AIA, the WIA, the Island Outpost as well as the Ward’s Harbour Beach. The event was described as inviting Torontonians to “Explore Ward's Island and Algonquin Island through guided nature walks, birding tours, Indigenous-led cultural programming, live performances, hands-on arts and crafts, and interactive environmental activities.” Despite poor weather, the author readings by Barbara Klunder, Maurice Vellekoop and Linda Rosenbaum were a hit, and the Indigenous programming of stories and teachings by Cat Criger, and hoop dancing by Nimkii Osawamick were incredible. There was a de-brief with the City and some of the Island participating groups to see how to improve on the event for the future. We’re pleased that there’s an intent to do these twice annually, around the Spring and Fall Equinox. So, stay tuned for more Island Awakening events.
